This is a really cool technique for painting with thread that isn’t cross stitch but definitely could be useful in some of your projects.
Pam Ash has the rundown on using long and short stitches in different colors to add shading to an embroidered design, and it’s lovely look. It’s time consuming but not that difficult, and it gives an amazing look to projects.
Bonus: she shows the technique on a fluer de lis design, which is very on point with Mardi Gras right around the corner.

I’ve done quite a bit of this. If you are interested in advance techniques you should look up Helen M. Stevens. Her work is amazing!
