Christmas Stocking Cross Stitch Patterns

November 1, 2023 by Sarah White

Everyone in my family has a knit Christmas stocking, so it would never occur to me to cross stitch a stocking, but it’s possible (albeit a lot of work!) and would definitely be an heirloom piece for anyone you make one for.

There are so many options out there you can make one to suit anyone’s style or favorite things. I’ve gathered a few patterns from Etsy to get you started but it’s easy to search and find Christmas stocking cross stitch patterns with just about any theme you can think of.

Let’s start with some Santa patterns. Cross Stitch Kits Ala has a gorgeous Santa wearing a while cloak and surrounded by white animals. Or go the opposite direction with tons of color on the Santa cross stitch stocking from Zanna Cross Stitch. On this one Santa is checking his list in front of a house with elves and gifts all around.

If you’re looking for something with a religious theme, this personalized stocking has a manger scene at the top, as well as flowers, trees, ornaments, reindeer and candy canes. The design is from Happinesst.

This vintage style snowman cross stitch stocking pattern has space for a name at the top and comes with a full alphabet. I love all the animals gathered around. You can get this pattern from Sampler Antique Stitch.

If I were going to make a cross stitch stocking I would find it hard to resist this retro deer design from Satsuma Street. The ornaments in the antlers are so cute, and you can make them whatever colors you want to suit your decor. I also love it on the black cross stitch fabric because it’s unexpected for the holiday season but really striking and fun.

Looking for even more patterns? White Raven Patterns has two sets of 15 designs you can buy as a set. The first one includes trees, retro cars, animals, Santas, gingerbread men and more, while the second includes ornaments, nutcrackers, some very cozy looking critters and more.

Go Back to Basics with Common Cross Stitch Terms

It’s back to school time where I live, which I always feel like is a great time to learn a new skill or take a deeper dive into something that you might not have learned a lot about before.

Usually when we are learning new hobbies we only know what we know. We learn the terms that we encounter, the skills that come up in the projects that we want to make. It’s not that we don’t care about other basics or different approaches, we just learn what we need to know to make what we want to make.

And that’s totally fine, but sometimes it’s a good idea to go back and review the basics or learn the things you might have missed the first time.

In that spirit I share this post from Caterpillar Cross Stitch all about basic cross stitch terms that every stitcher ought to know.

Did you know that the little bundle of thread you use for cross stitch is called a skein, for example? Or the difference between grid size and design area in a pattern? Or that working complete stitches one at a time is known as the English method? (I didn’t know that one! Apparently doing half of the stitch across the row and then coming back and finishing it is the Danish method. Who knew?)

There’s also a little bit about getting started with confidence that might be helpful at any skill level.

So what I’m saying is, even if you feel like you know a lot about cross stitch already, head over to Caterpillar Cross Stitch and check out their list of terms and make sure you know them all. If nothing else you’ll feel a little smarter, either because you already knew them all or you learned something new!

And if you do learn something new, I’d love to hear about it.
