Designer Spotlight: Cross Stitch Traveler

June 21, 2024 by Sarah White

If you’re looking for some funny cross stitch patterns to stitch for your snarkiest friend (even if that’s you!) you need to check out Cross Stitch Traveler on Etsy.

You’ve got to love a storefront where the “snarky-funny” category is 560 items deep (compared to a total of 961 items in the whole store as of this writing).

I couldn’t possibly give you a full rundown in the few hundred words I have here, but there’s lots of fun sweary, sarcastic, work humor and generalized snarkiness.

If there’s a cat involved you know I’ll find it so I had to share “She believed she could, but her cat was asleep on her lap so she didn’t.” This one features a great blend of sass, pretty flowers and a cat, and it also just looks fun to stitch. It uses 11 colors in a size of 123 by 131 stitches. That comes out to 8.75 by 9.5 inches, or 22.3 by 23.8 cm on 14 count fabric.

But of course there’s lot of other great stuff beyond the snarky and funny section, so let’s check some of that out, too.

In the holiday section you’ll find Christmas and Halloween patterns, and there’s still some snark in here, as well as cats in pumpkins and wrapped up in Christmas lights. There are pretty flowers and plants and a few floral frames you can use to stitch up your own sentiments such as a birth or wedding announcement or just add your own text of whatever sort.

The quotes section overlaps a bit with snark (and you’ll find some fun workplace humor here if you want to stitch up something for a Secret Santa or other office gift exchange) but also has some sweet and funny content. And the animals, birds and insects section is filled with cats, butterflies and bees, birds and other creatures (and even a few dogs).

Find all this and more at the Cross Stitch Traveler’s page on Etsy.

Designer Spotlight: Curious Carrie Designs

If you like seasonal samplers and cross stitch patterns with a primitive twist, you’ll enjoy the collection from Curious Carrie Designs.

You’ll find alphabet designs, biscornu, patriotic projects and more. The summer category is the largest on the storefront, with Americana and floral designs. There are also categories for the other seasons and more general designs.

One of my favorites is this pretty sunflower cross stitch pattern, which is shown styled as a biscornu but it wouldn’t have to be. The pattern features sunflowers and bees and a little beehive. It uses 12 colors of floss and each side of the pattern is 51 by 51 stitches, which comes out to 3.64 inches or 9.2 cm square.

I love the fabric she used for the sample, which she actually dyed purple herself, but it would also be pretty on a purchased light blue or other color if you don’t want to dye your own.

There’s also a whole set of themed biscornu with a four letter word on one side (crow, home, love and snow, to name a few) along with a seasonal pattern on the other side.

The shop has a rather small selection at around 90 patterns as of this writing, but it’s a nice collection of traditional looking designs heavy on samplers and biscornu designs, so if those are things you like you’ll want to be sure to check it out. Visit Curious Carrie Designs on Etsy to see all her pretty designs.

Are you a designer or do you have a favorite cross stitch designer who hasn’t made it into the spotlight yet? (You can see all the featured designers in the craft businesses category on the page.) Let me know in the comments, or you can submit more detailed information by clicking on “suggest a craft” at the center top of the page.
