While there are a lot of cross stitch patterns out there with words on them, sometimes you can’t find just the right word or phrase that you want to include on your cross stitch project. Or maybe you like the words but not the font that it used.
Whatever the reason, there may come a time when you want to add text to your cross stitch project, whether it’s a monogram, a date, people’s names or your own special snarky or love-filled sentiment. Or anywhere in between.
Sun Catcher Studio has a great collection of basic cross stitch fonts that you can use in your projects. Each one is shown with the letter A made large and then a small sample of the full alphabet. You can use the pattern generator to have it chart out the words or letters you want to use for you, or you can download the whole alphabet and draw out your pattern by hand.
There are fonts that are just back stitching and those that are made up of cross stitches.
What I love about this collection is that it shows you how many stitches the letters take up, so you can easily pick one that’s just the size you need. The given patterns range from three to 10 stitches tall, so there are a lot of options.
The potential problem of adding your own lettering to an existing project is that of scale — that is, choosing letters that are either too big or too small to look like they go with the rest of the pattern. (Of course if you’re just charting words to stand alone that isn’t a problem.) It’s nice to be able to see how big the letters are so you can judge how big your words will be and scale up or down accordingly as needed.
