Hanukkah Cross Stitch Patterns

November 21, 2023 by Sarah White

Every year I share Hanukkah cross stitch patterns, but it seems especially important this year to take a moment to reflect on the season of light and hope that Hanukkah is.

Stitch People has a cute Hanukkah freebie you can get when signing up for emails. It features a Star of David, menorah and dreidel.

The Hanukkah minis from Craftigurumi on Etsy were stitched on plastic canvas, making them perfect to turn into pins or magnets. But you could also stitch them on regular Aida cloth or even on cloth napkins or other linen for the holiday table. Patterns include a dreidel, menorah, Star of David, I’m guessing a piece of gelt, a jelly doughnut and a torah scroll.

More mini designs can be found on this sampler style word art cross stitch pattern from Etsy seller Little Apple Stitchery. The full piece is 133 by 133 stitches, or 9.5 inches square on 14 count cloth. It uses 11 colors.

Or there’s this Hanukkah symbols sampler from Cross Stitch Wow on Etsy, which has gifts and a dove and some other symbols we haven’t seen in other projects. It uses five colors and comes out at 5 inches square on 14 count fabric, with a stitch count of 70 by 70.

I love this Hanukkah word art pattern from Oh My Stitches Shop on Etsy. It looks really modern and pretty, especially on the dark fabric, but you could stitch the words in a different color and use a lighter background fabric color if you wanted. As is it uses six colors and measures 164 by 118 stitches, or 11.4 by 8.26 inches on 14 count fabric.

And finally I could not resist sharing this fun dreidel-spinning gnome from Demented Stitches on Etsy. This one is 67 by 69 stitches, or just a little less than 5 inches square when stitched up. I love it in traditional Hanukkah colors but you can make yours in whatever colors you like.

Designer Spotlight: Curious Carrie Designs

If you like seasonal samplers and cross stitch patterns with a primitive twist, you’ll enjoy the collection from Curious Carrie Designs.

You’ll find alphabet designs, biscornu, patriotic projects and more. The summer category is the largest on the storefront, with Americana and floral designs. There are also categories for the other seasons and more general designs.

One of my favorites is this pretty sunflower cross stitch pattern, which is shown styled as a biscornu but it wouldn’t have to be. The pattern features sunflowers and bees and a little beehive. It uses 12 colors of floss and each side of the pattern is 51 by 51 stitches, which comes out to 3.64 inches or 9.2 cm square.

I love the fabric she used for the sample, which she actually dyed purple herself, but it would also be pretty on a purchased light blue or other color if you don’t want to dye your own.

There’s also a whole set of themed biscornu with a four letter word on one side (crow, home, love and snow, to name a few) along with a seasonal pattern on the other side.

The shop has a rather small selection at around 90 patterns as of this writing, but it’s a nice collection of traditional looking designs heavy on samplers and biscornu designs, so if those are things you like you’ll want to be sure to check it out. Visit Curious Carrie Designs on Etsy to see all her pretty designs.

Are you a designer or do you have a favorite cross stitch designer who hasn’t made it into the spotlight yet? (You can see all the featured designers in the craft businesses category on the page.) Let me know in the comments, or you can submit more detailed information by clicking on “suggest a craft” at the center top of the page.
