I know a lot of people like to decorate their jackets, bags and other things with patches, and there are all sorts of place to buy them, but isn’t it more fun when you can make your own? Showing off your passions and your ability to craft makes this a double-fun idea for the DIY fashion folks out there.
You can actually pretty easily make a small cross stitch motif into a patch, especially if the finished stitching has straight sides. You can check out this video tutorial from Jessie Katz Greenberg to see how simple it is.
If you have a little cross stitch already made that you aren’t sure what to do with, all you need to make it into a patch is some scissors to trim down the fabric, fabric glue and binder clips.
The video shows how to make a patch with a rectangular piece of cross stitch. I imagine you could do it with something that’s round or more oddly shaped but it might not be as perfect. In that case, you might want to fix the excess fabric to the back of the work, leaving a little of the bare fabric showing if you need to, then stitching around the edge with blanket stitch or something else to give it a uniform look on the edges.
She also mentions that you can fuse or sew your patch onto your jacket or wherever you want to use it, but you could also make it into a pin by adding some felt and a pin back to the back. So many fun ideas.
This opens up a whole new avenue of gifting for family and friends who like adding patches to everything, and it’s a pretty quick project, too! Visit the video linked above for all the details.
