Sandcastle Cross Stitch Patterns

May 12, 2026 by Sarah White

It might be a little early as I write this to be thinking about summer vacation, but let’s take a look at some sandcastle cross stitch patterns while we’re dreaming of the beach.

I love this little sandcastle in a bottle from Threading Our Journey. The design uses 27 colors and measures 47 by 58 stitches, which comes out to 3.4 by 4.1 inches, or 8.5 by 10.5 cm, when stitched on 14 count fabric.

The Happiest Hoop also has this adorable little Fine and Sandy cross stitch pattern. This one fits in a three-inch hoop and uses 7 colors. It’s worked over 30 by 25 stitches and uses whole cross stitches and back stitch.

Another little design comes from Bella Rose Craft. This wee castle is shown in a four inch hoop, and it uses three colors. There’s a little back stitching on this one, too.

It doesn’t have to be July for you to stitch or display this summery sandcastle design from Thyme for Stitching. This design uses 11 colors and comes out about 4 by 4 inches/10 by 10 cm when stitched on 14 count fabric.

Stitch a more brightly colors sandcastle with this design from Cute Patterns by Maria. At 67 by 50 stitches, the pattern comes out to about 5 by 4 inches, or 13 by 10 cm. It uses 18 colors.

Or go for a dreamy watercolor look like this one from Juliette Studio Co. The design is 200 by 200 stitches, which comes out to 14.7 inches or 36.3 cm square on 14 count fabric (the pattern notes include measurements for higher counts if you want to make it smaller). It calls for 28 colors.

This last sandcastle from Autumn Andrea is part of a quartet of little beach themed patterns that also includes a seagull, beach house and sign. All four designs use 23 colors in total, but not all of them are used just in the sandcastle. The individual designs are about 11 by 10 inches each, or 28 by 25.4 cm.

Designer Spotlight: Yellow Birdie Stitches

If you love to cross stitch bookmarks, Yellow Birdie Stitches is the Etsy shop for you. The shop is based in the UK and almost all of its designs are bookmarks (there are also some cute square designs).

You’ll find bookmarks about everything from romance novel tropes to Asian inspired towers, cats and Art Nouveau designs.

This one of a mermaid reading would be fun for summer, whether for you or for a mermaid loving person in your life. It measures 24 by 78 stitches and the patterns offer measurements for three different stitch counts, but it’s about 1.75 by 3.5 inches (or 4.4 by 8.8 cm) when stitched on 14 count fabric.

It’s shown here on white fabric but the pattern also recommends light green or blue if you have that in your stash. It calls for 14 colors (or 15 if you choose to use Light Effects thread for part of the project) and it looks like it’s all whole cross stitches with a fair bit of back stitching.

You’ll also need some felt or card stock to finish the back of your bookmark, though it is shown freshly stitched here.

In addition to the bookmarks you’ll also find some square designs that I think are designed to be coasters or mounted onto greeting cards, but of course you could frame them in a small square frame as well.

The cat section has several of these with a cats and bonsai theme. There’s also a coffee set that includes a bookmark, coaster and keychain fob. You’ll also find some seasonal designs.

In addition to the above mentioned categories, you’ll find bookmarks with birds, bugs and dragons; patterns for spring, summer, autumn, Easter, Halloween and Christmas; fantasy designs and projects for tea lovers.

So grab an audiobook and a project form Yellow Birdie Stitches to make for your next paper book read.
