Teacher Cross Stitch Patterns for Back to School

August 15, 2023 by Sarah White

You might not want to stitch up a teacher cross stitch pattern for the first day of school to give to your new teacher, but if you start on these now they’ll be ready for the holiday season or whenever you want to show some teacher appreciation through cross stitch.

This back to school pencil gnome cross stitch pattern from Favorite Gnome made me laugh, and it will probably make a teacher in your life laugh, too. Just sway out the hair color if your teacher doesn’t have gray hair! This one is 5 by 10 inches (67 by 135 stitches) and uses 19 colors.

Teachers do a lot of things, including instructing, inspiring, encouraging and more. Show a teacher you appreciate all the things that go into the name with this 14-color cross stitch design from Kix Stitches. It measures 95 by 105 stitches.

Haunted by Naomi has a cute kawaii best teacher ever cross stitch pattern with a friendly apple and pencil. It is 76 by 72 stitches, or a little more than 5 inches on each side, and uses full cross stitches and back stitching.

Speaking of kawaii, Trellis & Thyme has a super cute cross stitch pattern with kawaii school supplies. These little cuties can be stitched together into a piece that measures 6 by 1.75 inches, or work each one as its own little pattern to decorate a bookmark or card to give to a teacher.

If your teacher is a fan of flowers, stitch up this heartfelt design about teaching as planting seeds. It comes from Teajeah Designs and is 167 by 165 stitches. That’s 13 by 13.5 inches on 14 count fabric when all stitched up.

And if you want to thank a teacher for their big heart, try this teacher appreciation cross stitch pattern from Cats in Space Art. It measures 78 by 74 stitches, which makes it a pretty quick project, and you’ll get a chance to use a lot of fun colors.

Go Back to Basics with Common Cross Stitch Terms

It’s back to school time where I live, which I always feel like is a great time to learn a new skill or take a deeper dive into something that you might not have learned a lot about before.

Usually when we are learning new hobbies we only know what we know. We learn the terms that we encounter, the skills that come up in the projects that we want to make. It’s not that we don’t care about other basics or different approaches, we just learn what we need to know to make what we want to make.

And that’s totally fine, but sometimes it’s a good idea to go back and review the basics or learn the things you might have missed the first time.

In that spirit I share this post from Caterpillar Cross Stitch all about basic cross stitch terms that every stitcher ought to know.

Did you know that the little bundle of thread you use for cross stitch is called a skein, for example? Or the difference between grid size and design area in a pattern? Or that working complete stitches one at a time is known as the English method? (I didn’t know that one! Apparently doing half of the stitch across the row and then coming back and finishing it is the Danish method. Who knew?)

There’s also a little bit about getting started with confidence that might be helpful at any skill level.

So what I’m saying is, even if you feel like you know a lot about cross stitch already, head over to Caterpillar Cross Stitch and check out their list of terms and make sure you know them all. If nothing else you’ll feel a little smarter, either because you already knew them all or you learned something new!

And if you do learn something new, I’d love to hear about it.
