Cross Stitch Patterns for Mom

April 2, 2024 by Sarah White

It turns out I’ve shared a lot of Mother’s Day related cross stitch patterns through the years, so this post will serve to share some of the older roundups I’ve done as well as some new patterns I found this year.

You can stitch up some hearts for Mother’s Day, keep your projects sweet or make them snarky or funny if your relationship with your mom is like that.

These are going to fall in the sweet category. For example this one from Red Bear Design on Etsy that keeps it short and sweet with a “love you mom.” The pastel words and flowers are pretty but you can change up the colors as you like to suit mom’s decor. This one uses 14 count fabric and fits in an 8-inch hoop, and you can also buy it as a kit if you’d rather.

This World’s Greatest Mom chart from Creating Works of Love is technically a corner to corner crochet pattern, but the stitches are square so you can use it for cross stitch as well. The pattern is available from LoveCrafts.

Give your mum (or mom) a bunch of flowers with this colorful hoop art project from DMC. It uses 10 colors of thread and you could pretty easily change the u to an o if you need to. The pattern is free when you sign up for their newsletters.

Let everyone know your mom is the best mom ever with this easy cross stitch pattern from Helen’s Crossing on Etsy. It uses two colors and is made with full stitches and backstitch for the lettering. At 48 by 48 stitches, it comes out to 3.43 by 3.43 inches or 8.71 by 8.71 cm, perfect for using as a card or putting in a little hoop.

Crafting is My Hobby has a couple of cute free charts for Mother’s Day, including this I heart mom design (the other says thank you mom). These sweet designs both use two colors and are easy for new stitchers.

Or if you just want to say Happy Mother’s Day in stitches, grab this pattern from Etsy seller Lucky Star Stitches. This colorful script is eye catching and fun to stitch. It uses 11 colors all in full stitches and fits in a 7-inch hoop when stitched on 14 count fabric.

All About Stitching on Perforated Paper

I recently wrote a post on my blog about using a stitchable journal cover and I mentioned that you can make your own stitched cover for a journal by using perforated paper instead of buying a stitchable notebook.

I have to admit, though, that I’ve never used perforated paper for cross stitch myself. I definitely want to because I think it would be great to use for bookmarks that don’t fray and have a little more stability, for example.

Sirious Stitches has us covered, though, because they did a deep dive into all things perforated cross stitch pattern that is worth the time to read through.

The post mentions that a lot of people use perforated paper for cross stitch because they buy an ornament kit that uses it. I’ve never seen these (or at least never noticed that that is what they were) but it’s a great idea to make small projects like ornaments in this way. It also talks about the pros and cons of using cross stitch paper, where to buy it and how to make your own.

Making it yourself is an awesome idea because if you already have a pattern in mind you can just make holes in your paper where you need stitches to be and leave the rest solid. This would be ideal for making greeting cards, for example.

In addition to kits and sheets you can often find the paper pre-cut into different shapes you can use to make your own designs, no real pattern required.

The post also includes tips and advice for how to stitch on perforated paper that you’ll want to check out before you try your first project.

I’m super intrigued by the idea of using perforated paper for cross stitch and will probably be trying it out soon. Have you used it before? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Check out the post over at Sirious Stitches for more information.
