The other day I was looking at spring and Easter cross stitch patterns, as one will do this time of year, and I came across this cute cross-stitched bag pattern from Durene J Cross Stitch.
The design features two little chicks and a big flower. It measures 42 by 40 stitches and comes out to 3 by 2.9 inches on 14 count fabric.
But the really cool part about this pattern (which you can get on Etsy) is that it’s not just the chart, but it also shows how to make the project into a little bag.
This is such a cute idea and honestly not something I have ever tried before. But it’s a great way to make a little handmade treat bag a little more special.
From what I can see of this project on the listing page, it looks like she used two pieces of cross stitch fabric for the front and back of the bag. You could do this and either leave the “back” side blank, stitch the same pattern again on the back (maybe even in different colors if you wanted) or you could find a design of similar size to use on the other side.
Alternatively you could use regular fabric for this portion of the bag, either matching or contrasting to the fabric used for the bottom and the drawstring casing. So many fun options!
Another possibility would be to finish the edges of your cross stitch fabric and then you can sew the cross stitch design onto a bag you already have or a bag you are making so that the full bag would be made out of regular fabric. That would make it a little more durable (and you wouldn’t have to cut as many pieces of fabric to make the bag) and you wouldn’t have to worry about things in the bag poking through the holes in the cross stitch fabric.
