Printable Cross Stitch Graph Paper

July 17, 2023 by Sarah White

If you want to design your own cross stitch patterns, there are a couple of different ways to go about it. If you’re starting with a picture or a logo using a program online where you can upload the image and have it converted into a chart is the easiest way to do it.

But if you want to draw your own charts from your imagination or a sketch, you can use online programs or software for that, but you might also like to draw things out by hand.

The few times I’ve designed cross stitch patterns I have started with graph paper, because it’s easier for me to draw it out that way and to fix any mistakes that might be in it. Then I can either take a picture of that chart or convert it to a digital chart made with a program if I want to share it with other people.

The only problem is, standard graph paper isn’t the same size as your cross stitch fabric. Usually graph paper has 4×4 squares per inch, which is much bigger than cross stitch fabric (14 count for instance means 14 squares per inch). So if you design something that looks good on regular graph paper it will come out a lot smaller when you stitch it on standard cross stitch fabric.

Of course you can buy cross stitch graph paper (this set, for instance, has paper in 10, 14, 16, 18 and 22 count configurations) and you can make photo copies of the sizes you use most often so you don’t have to keep buying paper if you’re sketching a lot.

But there are also places you can find printable cross stitch graph paper, which is great if you only need a sheet or two to sketch out an idea for personal use. Better Cross Stitch Patterns has printables from 6 count up to 32 count, so you can design your chart to be jut the size you want it to be.

Of course as you get into the higher counts, the chart is actually bigger than the finished design because you wouldn’t be able to see your markings if there are 22 or more squares in an inch, but using graph paper scaled to the design you want to make still makes it easier to see the scale of your project.

Have you worked with printable graph paper before? I’d love to hear about your experience!
