Your Guide to Discontinued and Hard to Find Cross Stitch Thread

April 23, 2023 by Sarah White

I am not so much of a cross stitcher that I have ever come across the problem of needing a particular color of cross stitch floss that wasn’t readily available.

But if you are working from older patterns, or a specialty thread or limited edition color is being used, you might run into the problem of having a discontinued color, or even just a color that’s hard to find. (Because just because you can’t find it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been discontinued, just like a color being discontinued doesn’t always mean you’ll be unable to find it anywhere.)

Since I am clearly not the expert on these issues, I found this post from Sirious Stitches that delves deeply into the issue of discontinued and hard to find thread colors. The post also discusses dye lots and the problem with trying to choose a replacement for a color you can’t find by looking at colors on a computer monitor.

What’s really awesome about this post is that they collected some of the popular discontinued colors (these are from the 2013 new colors pack, which became really hard to find really quickly, as well as other discontinued DMC colors) along with popularly suggested replacements and other options from their stash.

In addition to just listing the numbers, though, the post also shows all three colors on bobbins so you can compare, and then stitched together so you can see how good of a match they are.

In a lot of cases you can just choose a similar color for a thread you can’t find and it won’t make a huge difference. But if you want to get as close as you can to the designer’s intentions, or you need a really specific shade for a project, this kind of information is invaluable.
