Juneteenth is a celebration in the United States that marks when enslaved people living in Texas (specifically, Galveston, via what’s known as General Order No. 3) finally got the word that they were free. It happened on June 19, 1865, and is celebrated as a kind of independence day in the Black community. Let’s stitch up some Juneteenth cross stitch patterns.
I love this classic looking sampler style design from Siren Stitchworks that includes the date and the words “sweet land of liberty.” The birds in the cherry tree are adapted from 19th century samplers, and the design measures 79 by 119 stitches. If my counting is correct it looks like it uses around 10 colors.
Celebrate the breaking of chains with this design from 7StitchesTN. At 148 by 148 stitches, it uses 10 colors. It comes out to 10.6 inches or 26.9 cm square on 14 count fabric.
Teajeigh Designs has a lovely design that explains that we need Juneteenth because not everyone was free in 1776. The designer has a variety of patterns she calls mandalas that are mix and match if you want to use a different text or image, but I think this one is great juts as it is. (There’s also a raised fist or other women’s faces you could sub in.) As shown this design measures 211 by 209 stitches and comes out to about 15 inches/38 cm square on 14 count fabric.
Digitizing Everythin has a bold graphic Juneteenth 1865 design that looks like it’s dripping honey (though you can use different colors than these if you’d rather). The design uses three colors, and on 14 count fabric comes out to 8.4 by 6.8 inches, or 21.1 by 17.1 cm.
More generally there’s this Black History live it, learn it, make it design from Mamaida Pattern. It uses four colors and measures 98 by 123 stitches. On 14 count fabric that comes out to 7 by 12.4 inches, or 17.8 by 31.4 cm.
